There is an enormous demand – both commercially and experimentally – for animated work across all media including film, television, internet, games and advertising.
This one year Level 3 course is a top-up final year, principally for students who have completed their Foundation Degree in Animation Practice. The course also accepts Foundation Degree and second year BA (Hons) students with relevant experience from other courses and other institutions.
The course builds on prior learning with a focus on developing professional practice, technical skills and theoretical knowledge which future employers would expect in a graduate entrant to animation and related industries.
The course aims to replicate, as closely as possible, the working environment, attitudes and practices found in animation studios. You will be expected to manage processes, budgets and teams, to produce animated projects and to develop a professional approach to learning and to the development of your own skills, as if you were working in industry.
You will highlight your animation skills around a project that you will create, nurture and use to showcase your professional skills. Using real world situations, you will demonstrate an understanding of all three key areas of the animation pipeline – artistic direction, technical direction and animation. You will be encouraged to manage your own development as you look for technical and creative solutions to visual problems. You will also collaborate with colleagues from other creative departments to plan, budget and deliver a major project.
On successful completion of this course, you will have the skills and portfolio to leave as a highly employable animation graduate, or study the postgraduate MA Animation Futures or M Innov/MFA Animation Futures.
Level 3
Encourages you to create a portfolio of industry-standard work that demonstrates your ability to complete demanding animation tasks and projects.
Topics include: film analysis; editing training (Final Cut/ Premiere); technical training (advanced Maya/After Effects; DVD authoring); Enterprise and Entrepreneurship; Personal and Professional Development; Dissertation.
Assessment
You will be continually assessed through the presentation of project and written work, including a dissertation.
Learning and Support
You will study through a mix of practice and theory-based learning. This will include lectures, seminars, workshops, demonstrations, individual tutorials, self-directed study, pitches and projects. You will be supported by well-qualified teaching staff, sessional staff and visiting professionals who will bring an industry perspective to the course.
Career Opportunities
A wide range of careers are open to animation graduates, including: digital animation; film and television; advertising; post-production; animation direction; character design; 3D modeller; storyboarding; multimedia; computer and video games.
Progression
Successful graduates of this course can continue their study and apply for the postgraduate course in MA Animation Futures or M Innov/MFA Animation Futures.
