Today’s sophisticated viewing audiences are creating a demand for specialists in motion graphics who are able to generate captivating content – channel identities, trailers, advertisements, logos, title sequences and other forms of visual branding – that engage both the mind and the emotions.

This unique course, highly recognised by the media and broadcasting industry, will equip you with the creativity, skills, expertise and knowledge to contribute to a growing market. You will look at the entire motion graphics process, learning traditional crafts like storytelling and image making, alongside the latest digital tools and techniques.

You will study how to integrate graphics, live footage and sound to enhance film television, advertising and other productions. You can expect to gain extensive experience through project work that reflects current broadcast styles and demonstrates your creative and professional skills – from concepts to creation.

After completing the course, you will have specialised talents that can lead you into the new or traditional areas of motion graphics.

Level 1

Introduces all elements of the design process, underpinned by skills and theory. You will work with a variety of traditional graphic design skills, as well as capture and manipulation techniques for images and animation. Topics include: ideas generation; typography; time-based narrative; animation; screen design; logos and branding.

Level 2

You will be encouraged to explore key concepts and processes through studio sessions, experimentation and collaborations. Focus will be on developing industry-standard skills for motion design, including production methods, image manipulation and the essential tools for realising solutions. Topics include: pre and post production; sound; moving brands; broadcast design; advertising and promotions.

Level 3

Concentrates on your own aims and ambitions, reflecting your graduate aspirations and future career planning. Topics include: motion typography; live projects and competitions; major branding project; self-initiated work including a portfolio and showreel; a dissertation.

In addition, each Level contains elements of Contextual Studies, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, and Personal and Professional Development to give you a rounded education that prepares you for professional life.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through the presentation of written and project work. Assessment in the final year is through a dissertation and portfolio.

Learning and Support

You will study through a mix of practice and theory-based learning. This will include lectures, seminars, workshops, individual tutorials, self-directed study and projects. You will be supported by well-qualified teaching staff, sessional staff and visiting professionals who will bring an industry perspective to the course.
