Media Statement: Ravensbourne responds to HEFCE announcement

Professor Robin Baker OBE, Director of Ravensbourne said:

‘We welcome the news today that Ravensbourne is to receive a 7.43% increase in our teaching grant for 2010/11, bringing our total annual grant from HEFCE to £8.013 million.

It is proof that our ambitious vision, which includes our relocation to a purpose-built campus at Greenwich Peninsula in October this year, is delivering sustainable rewards. Today’s settlement acknowledges our competitiveness as an institution, also borne out by a significant 37% increase in student applications to our courses this coming academic year.

As one of the top four HEIs in England receiving an increase, and the only specialist creative college in this group, our grant uplift demonstrates confidence in our high quality learning and teaching and is recognition of the important contribution we make to the knowledge economy and the design and digital media sectors.

Ravensbourne has a long track record of producing industry ready graduates with the skills, aptitude and ambition to succeed in the creative industries, the fastest growing sector in the UK.

However, we are far from complacent. Whilst today’s news will support additional student numbers at Ravensbourne in 2010/11, it is balanced by budget reductions in other aspects of our business. We must continue to manage our funds effectively and responsibly, in order to produce highly skilled, adaptable, and creative graduates who will help deliver Britain’s digital future.
