Rave Live 2010
Ravensbourne’s Communication Media Faculty students held their annual end of year show for the last time at their Chislehurst campus on 19 May, before the college relocates to Greenwich Peninsula this Autumn. The event, Rave Live, celebrated the 40th birthday of the format, the UK’s largest student-led broadcasting event, one which attracts the biggest names in industry looking for the next generation of student talent.
Rave Live was broadcast live via Freeview and IPTV and huge 4 metre screens broadcast the show to 260 guests on campus. Interactive pods enabled delegates to view show content, listen to Rave Live Radio on Resonance FM and request student CVs via email.
In addition, 50 bespoke handheld devices were passed out to delegates throughout the day, offering access to a range of interactive content. The ‘delegate experience’ was captured via lapel-mounted iPhones, recording from the built-in iPhone video camera. A pre-recorded piece ‘Tempest’ was shot with a camera recording at 7,000 frames-per-second, capturing the firing of a bullet and water droplets on a speaker in detailed super-slow motion. Ravensbourne Postgraduate students, who have formed a 3D Applied Research Lab, also launched their first 3D TV exhibition on the 3D screens at the event.
Huge names in the industry made an appearance, including BBC, Ogilvy, Karmarama, ascent media, Loewy, apple and Sky who showcased their 3D TV technology on site.

Barbara Howell, Head of Faculty, Communication Media said:
“Through Rave Live our students have transformed the way we deliver content. The changing media industry is constantly asking new things of industry professionals, and our students have to be ready. Our courses which culminate in Rave Live at the end of each year, help students employ digital technologies to deliver top quality content to a wide-ranging and professional audience.”
Industry guests were impressed by the quality of work on offer. Andy Davy, Portfolio Management, Future Media & Technology at the BBC said:
“Rave Live is a truly impressive demonstration of real enthusiasm and talent, coupled with the wide range of capabilities that Ravensbourne students have to offer”.
Bob Gunning, Innovation Delivery Manager at BSkyB said:
“Thank you for your invitation to Rave Live. I would like to say how professionally the whole event was managed and run. The range of disciplines covered was impressive, from the full-scale studio hosting the talent show in the marquee, to the numerous smaller stands showcasing innovative areas of technology. The quality of the work was outstanding. I particularly enjoyed your 3D labs, and seeing live content delivered to multiple platforms. Well done.”
