Woolwich Schools Design New Community
Budding architects, interior designers, urban planners and engineers in primary schools across Woolwich have been working with Ravensbourne tutors to develop ideas and 3D models of a new urban space at Greenwich Peninsula, next door to Ravensbourne’s new building.
The education project, conceived by Ravensbourne, Greenwich Education Business Partnership (GEBP) and Lend Lease, has asked Year 5 and Year 6 pupils in Plumstead Cluster Schools and Charlton Special School to create their vision of what an ideal urban community should look like. In doing so, it has encouraged the children to think about their own environment and exposed them to possible careers in construction, design and regeneration. The project has also supported community engagement and place-making at Greenwich Peninsula.
The project culminated in the schools presenting their best models and drawing plans to a panel of judges from Ravensbourne, Greenwich Council, GEBP and Lend Lease at Mitre Passage, Greenwich Peninsula. The winning school, Timbercroft Primary, received a plaque and a prizes for each pupil taking part. The schools will also be given a VIP visit to Ravensbourne’s new building later in the year.
James Ward, Head of Further Education at Ravensbourne, said, “I wasn’t sure what to expect from the pupils, but all their models are excellent. Each of them are really different, in their colours, sizes, choice of material – and they all came from the same brief.”
