On March 17, Ravensbourne welcomed comedian Marcus Brigstocke (Have I Got News For You?, Argumental) as the host of ECO Storm, a key debate on sustainability issues in broadcasting. Marcus was joined by panelists Richard Smith, BBC’s Sustainable Productions Manager, Dax Lovegrove, WWF-UK’s Head of Business and Industry, Keith Horgan, The Carbon Trust’s Partnership Development Manager, and David Klafowski The Farm Group’s Technical Director.

All panelists, with differing interests in green and carbon reduction issues, responded to questions from students on innovations and issues in the media production industry. These included: justifying weekly flights for executives, selling greening to money-conscious clients, and whether or not Jeremy Clarkson driving an electric car on Top Gear could impact on consumer choice.

Eco enthusiast Marcus Brigstocke commented, “In many ways it can be difficult to engage an audience when the whole panel is in agreement – conflict is what interests people. But the students got really involved. I would have liked to have asked them whether they thought there is still this one cool, sexy programme to be made about sustainability that will really grab people’s attention, and what it could be. But the students seemed bright and keen, so I’m sure they could write and create something themselves that would engage people in green debate.”

ECO Storm was organised by Ravensbourne’s Green Steering Group, which allows staff and students to come together to find solutions on how to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as adopt more green conscious work methods already being used within our industries today.
