African Film and Fashion Royalty Visit Ravensbourne

Ravensbourne hosted a delegation of African VIPs, including Nollywood film heroine Stella Damascus and London-based designer to the stars Adebayo Jones, on the morning of 18 May. The group toured the building and met with staff and students, getting the chance to see the digital facilities and RIBA-award winning architecture.

In town for an award ceremony to support inspiring women of African descent, the jury for the Women4Africa Awards also included Isha Johansen, the first woman to own a football team in Africa, and Tola Onigbanjo, a TV and radio presenter.

As well as meeting senior management and various academic staff, the jury delegation also spoke to students from the Ravensbourne Association of Nigerian Students (RAN), including president Dayo Balogun. Representatives from RAN joined Business Development Manager Nike Awoyinka at Saturday’s Awards ceremony, where she presented the Media Professional of the Year award on behalf of Ravensbourne.

“It’s a real honour to present the award”, said Nike. “Last month I traveled with Ravensbourne Chief Executive Director Prof. Robin Baker to Nigeria as part of a relationship we are building with the Bank of Industry Nigeria to develop the capacity of Nigerian creative talents to compete effectively in the global marketplace and to promote a more positive image of Africans. We are delighted to be involved in a laudatory project such as the Women4Africa event which demonstrates the many successes of Africa and its rich creative talent pool.”
