3D Printing for Kids

October 3, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

Kids get all the fun stuff, Lego, Scalectrix, cartoons and now they even get 3D printers!

I wonder if we will still need to collect cardboard tubes and washing up liquid bottles in the future…

Lighting design

October 3, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

Not the most recent news, should have posted this a month ago really….

Mark Mcdonnell – IDEA Student – LED and dynamo based lighting design for camping that collapses and zips up for storage and  rotating base for charging.

Reverse engineering of stock components and use of the uPrint machine allowed rapid testing of functional prototypes and could be finished to a high standard.

Jason Taylor – IDEAS Student – LED based lighting.

Once again using the uPrint to great advantage to make components that replicate the features of an injection moulded part, snap fits and internal fixings for components.

Here is something that is not only beautiful as a form but would have been nearly impossible to do without rapid prototyping technologies.

Arkitypo – Johnson Banks

August 19, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

We have a project running with Johnson Banks to create an alphabet of 3 dimensional lettering using 3D printing techniques and CAD software. Jon has been working with Solidworks and both the uPrint and ZCorp machines to create the prototypes.

Its a really good opportunity to push the technology into other areas and to consider type in a different, very sculptural way.

The johnson banks thought for the week blog has some more information and images.

Tubie – Mensa Sudoku Puzzle

August 8, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

The Tubie, a sudoku based puzzle by Tim Grollman, is now available in the latest Argos catalogue and other stockists. Tim’s work with the Prototyping department started by coming in to use the laser. Tim used the laser to make the prototypes that have been used to develop the concept, sell it to manufacturers.

We are very happy and proud to have worked with Tim on the Tubie. Recently we have spent time using other machines and techniques to prototype new, up and coming puzzles…. cant say any more…

3 variants of the Tubie.

BBC Click Visit

July 30, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

The BBC Click visited us last week. We scanned the presenters, Spencer and Nima, did some clean up of the models and set them to print on various machines. Turned out 2 heads on 3 machines in a couple of hours. A lot of fun and a break from the routine. It went out this morning and will do a couple more times but is on iPlayer too.

Unfortunately, being the one who was doing the scanning I couldn’t take many pics.
