Further Education Diplomas and Certificate
Further Education Diplomas and Certificates Aimed at school-leavers, these intensive programmes let you experience a range of art and design activities to help you assess your strengths, confirm your aspirations and lead to making the right choice about your next step into Higher Education or work. A combination of practical studio projects, workshops and traditional academic learning will encourage you to experiment with craft and digital technology.
Practicing artists, designers and broadcasters will introduce you to new ideas in art, design and communications. You will receive practical guidance throughout your diploma and every help in directing you to the right degree or work option, including interview preparation and how to best present your portfolio. You will complete the programme in a strong position.
Most students go on to Higher Education and many to design and broadcasting programmes at Ravensbourne. If you decide to go directly into work, we'll help you to find opportunities.
Diplomas
Level 3 and 4 Diploma in Foundation Studies: Art, Design and Media (1 year, full-time)
and
Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies: Media Production (1 year, full-time)
These Diplomas are taught in three stages. Throughout each stage, you will learn about the range of Higher Education opportunities and subject areas available after you complete your Diploma.
Stage 1 'Exploratory'
Your first stage features a series of introductory projects focusing on the core disciplines of:
- Media experimentation
- Observation skills
- Recording and research techniques
- Contextual studies.
Art, Design and Media students will then explore a range of different subject areas, including:
- Graphic Design
- Fashion and Textiles Design
- Lens-Based Media (animation, photography, film and video, broadcasting and sound design)
- Three-Dimensional Design (architecture, interior, product, set and interactive design)
- Life Drawing.
Media Production students will explore the following subject areas:
- Moving Image (animation, film and video and broadcasting)
- Digital Photography
- Sound Design.
These specialist projects will help you develop a sense of where your skills and interests lie so that you can confidently choose the next stage of the course.
Stage 2 'Pathway'
Here, you will deepen and develop specialist knowledge within your chosen subject area. This will enable you to plan your next steps in entering Higher Education or your chosen career path.
We will encourage you to look and work beyond narrow definitions, and to collaborate with staff and students from other disciplines. This enriching experience will help you achieve a good understanding of art, design and communication practices.
During this stage you will also develop a proposal for a final major project of study.
Stage 3 'Confirmatory'
During the final stage, you will undertake and complete a major seven-week project, reflecting on your chosen specialist area and your planned progression path.
This project will culminate in a public exhibition of your work.
Certificate
BTEC National Certificate in Art and Design (one year, full-time)
If you have just completed your GCSEs or AS Levels and are looking to focus on art, design or media communication, our new BTEC National Certificate in Art and Design could be your next move.
The course is equivalent to two A levels* and perfect if you are looking for an alternative to AS or A2 study.
The advantage of joining Ravensbourne at this stage is studying in a university-level environment that offers second-to-none specialist facilities.
To give you a flavour of what is on offer, we have 3D design workshops, a photography studio, fashion studios, and two world-class television studios.
On successful completion, you will have a number of internal progression opportunities:
- Continuing with Ravensbourne and studying the Diploma in Foundation Studies
– guaranteed entry if recommended by the Subject Leader for Further Education. - Continuing with Ravensbourne and studying the Level 0 in Design and Communication, subject to successful admissions procedures.
- Continuing with Ravensbourne and studying a Foundation Degree Arts (FdA) or Science (FdSc), subject to successful admissions procedures.
* Subject to final grades, this course is the equivalent to two A levels.
Stage 1
This contains compulsory units cover drawing, visual communication, and using digital design IT packages.
Stage 2
Introduces you to specialist areas within the design and communication fields, including:
- Fashion and textiles
- 3D design
- Graphic design
- Animation, video, photography and motion graphic design
- Broadcasting disciplines.
The course ends with a final major study that can be based on one of any of the areas covered in Stages 1 and 2.
