What is Commercial Design?

Commercial designers – interior designers who specialise in commercial design – work with clients at the beginning of either new building, or renovation projects.

What will I be doing?

Depending on the project, typical work involves:

• measuring the existing building, or obtaining measurements for a new building project
• pitching ideas for the ceiling and lighting options
• making recommendations to arrange the interior space to meet the needs of the client
• preparing schematics, which are vital for developing the ideas for arranging the major construction elements of the interior space
• obtaining any necessary building permits, communicating with any current tenants of the building; and arranging the contracts with plumbers, electricians, and construction professionals.

What skills do I need?

• imagination and creativity
• technical drawing ability
• confident use of IT, including specialist packages
• comfortable working with clients
• attention to detail.
