Communications engineer

What is a Communications Engineer?

Broadcast communications engineers are responsible for the radio and satellite communication systems needed to make broadcast TV and radio programmes happen.

What would I be doing?

  • setting-up, operating and maintaining radio and satellite communication systems
  • liaising with other transmission and communications engineers at other broadcast organisations and at outside broadcasts
  • liaising with production staff
  • possibly working as an operational engineer in the MCR (master control room), at a television station, or setting up wireless cameras and communication systems on outside broadcasts.

What skills do I need?

  • being comfortable working as part of a team and independently
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • an ability to solve problems
  • good all-round knowledge of analogue, and digital video and audio systems
  • specialist knowledge of terrestrial and satellite transmission
  • ability to stay calm and function efficiently when under pressure.
