What is an Architect?

Architects design and execute construction for a range of projects. From the Olympics to shopping malls to airports and corporate spaces, you could find yourself working on a number of challenging and invigorating projects. Your decisions will affect public safety, so specialist training is required and, only after successful completion, will you be licensed to plan and design buildings. What’s more, no two days will be the same.

What will I be doing?

Typical work involves:

  • developing ideas, based on client requirements
  • pitching to clients
  • advising clients on the practicality of proposed projects
  • producing detailed drawings, which are used to project costings
  • negotiating with contractors
  • preparing planning applications
  • coordinating the work of contractors
  • site visits to check on progress and ensure project is running within the agreed time frame
  • providing solutions to any problems that may arise.

What skills do I need?

  • imagination and creativity
  • technical drawing ability
  • confident use of IT, including specialist packages
  • comfortable working with people
  • attention to detail.
