    Aimed at school and college leavers who want to study fashion, this course lets you experience activities within fashion and textile design to help you assess your strengths in this area and confirm aspirations for your next step.

    If you have a strong interest in fashion but are not ready to undertake a fashion degree, then this course is for you. A combination of practical studio projects, workshops and traditional academic learning will encourage you to experiment with craft and digital technology within the fashion arena.

    Practicing fashion and textile designers will introduce you to new ideas in the broad subject ranges within the fashion industry. You will receive practical guidance throughout your diploma, and help in directing you to the right degree or work option, including interview preparation and how to best present your portfolio. You will complete the course in a strong position.

    Progression

    Exploratory

    Your first stage features a series of introductory projects focusing on the core disciplines of fashion and textiles through:

  • observation skills
  • recording and research techniques
  • design development
  • realisation and presentation of final ideas
  • life drawing
  • contextual studies

    As a fashion and textiles student, you will explore the following subject areas:

  • fashion design
  • textile design
  • fashion photography, styling and promotion
  • fashion lifestyle products

  • Pathway

    You will develop your specialist knowledge within your chosen subject area in fashion and textiles. We will encourage you to look and work beyond narrow definitions, and to collaborate with staff and students from other disciplines.

    Confirmatory

    During the final stage, you will undertake and complete a major seven-week project, reflecting on your chosen specialist area of fashion and textiles and your planned progression path. This project will culminate in a public exhibition of your work.

    Students for Foundation Diplomas are normally expected to possess:

  • four GCSEs, grade C or above, including English,
  • or Level 3 Functional Skills in English

    Students are also normally expected to possess one of the following:

  • one A level or two AS levels, Grade C or above in relevant subject area, or
  • Progression Diploma (Level 3) in a related subject area, or
  • Advanced Diploma (Level 3) in a related subject area

    BTEC Level 3 National Award or Certificate qualifications may also be considered for entry.

    Other relevant and equivalent qualifications are considered on an individual basis.
