    This is our most popular Foundation Diploma course and offers a great introduction to all the subject areas Ravensbourne has to offer.

    The course is aimed at school and college leavers and lets you experience the full range of digital media and design activities to help you assess your strengths and confirm aspirations for your next step into higher education or work.

    If you have a broad interest in digital media and design, but are not sure which subject to specialise in, then this course if for you. A combination of practical studio projects, workshops and traditional academic learning will encourage you to experiment with craft and digital technology.

    Practicing artists, designers and broadcasters will introduce you to new ideas in design, communication and media. You will receive practical guidance throughout your diploma and help in directing you to the right degree or work option, including interview preparation and how to best present your portfolio.

    Progression

    You will complete the course in a strong position. Most students go on to higher education and many to a wide range of Ravensbourne degree courses. If you wish to progress to one of our degree courses, please discuss your options with your course leader when you are studying with us. If you decide to go directly into work, we’ll help you to find opportunities.

    Exploratory

    Your first stage features a series of introductory projects focusing on the core disciplines of:

    - media experimentation
    - observation skills
    - life drawing
    - recording and research techniques
    - contextual studies

    Design and media students will then explore a range of different subject areas, including:

    - graphics
    - fashion and textiles design
    - lens-based media (animation, photography, film and video, broadcasting and sound design)
    - 3D design (architecture, interior, product, set and interactive design)

    These specialist projects will help you develop a sense of where your skills and interests lie so that you can confidently choose the next stage of the course.

    Pathway

    You will deepen and develop specialist knowledge within your chosen subject area. This will enable you to plan your next steps in entering higher education or your chosen career path. We will encourage you to look and work beyond narrow definitions, and to collaborate with staff and students from other disciplines.

    During this stage you will also develop a proposal for a final major project of study.

    Confirmatory

    During the final stage, you will undertake and complete a major seven-week project, reflecting on your chosen specialist area and your planned progression path. This project will culminate in a public exhibition of your work.

    Students for Foundation Diplomas are normally expected to possess:

  • four GCSEs, grade C or above, including English,
  • or Level 3 Functional Skills in English

    Students are also normally expected to possess one of the following:

  • one A level or two AS levels, Grade C or above in relevant subject area, or
  • Progression Diploma (Level 3) in a related subject area, or
  • Advanced Diploma (Level 3) in a related subject area

    BTEC Level 3 National Award or Certificate qualifications may also be considered for entry.

    Other relevant and equivalent qualifications are considered on an individual basis.

    A registration fee, currently £140 applies to all students on Pre-foundation, Foundation and Access to Higher Education Diploma courses, irrespective of the age of the student. In addition a tuition fee may be payable.
