    Aimed at school and college leavers who want to study media, this course lets you experience activities within broadcasting and digital media production to help you assess your strengths in this area and confirm aspirations for your next step.

    If you have a strong interest in media but are not ready to undertake or to choose a media-related agree, then this course is for you.

    A combination of practical studio projects, workshops and traditional academic learning will encourage you to experiment with craft and digital technology. Practicing broadcasters and media professionals will introduce you to new ideas in media production.

    You will receive practical guidance throughout your diploma and help in directing you to the right degree or work option, including interview preparation and how to best present your portfolio. You will complete the course in a strong position.

    The majority of students on this course progress onto broadcasting and media-related degree courses at Ravensbourne. If you decide to go directly into work, we’ll help you to find opportunities.

    Exploratory

    Your first stage features a series of introductory projects focusing on the core disciplines of narrative story telling through:

    - recording and research techniques
    - contextual studies
    - concepts and processes

    As a media production student, you will explore the following subject areas:

    - animation
    - broadcasting, film and video
    - digital photography
    - sound design

    These specialist projects will help you develop a sense of where your skills and interests lie so that you can confidently choose the next stage of the course.

    Pathway

    You will deepen and develop your specialist knowledge within your chosen subject area. This will enable you to plan your next steps in entering higher education or your chosen career path.

    We will encourage you to look and work beyond narrow definitions, and to collaborate with staff and students from other disciplines.

    During this stage you will also develop a proposal for a final major project of study.

    Confirmatory

    During the final stage, you will undertake and complete a major seven-week project, reflecting on your chosen specialist area and your planned progression path. This project will culminate in a public exhibition of your work.

    Students for Foundation Diplomas are normally expected to possess:

  • four GCSEs, grade C or above, including English,
  • or Level 3 Functional Skills in English

    Students are also normally expected to possess one of the following:

  • one A level or two AS levels, Grade C or above in relevant subject area, or
  • Progression Diploma (Level 3) in a related subject area, or
  • Advanced Diploma (Level 3) in a related subject area

    BTEC Level 3 National Award or Certificate qualifications may also be considered for entry.

    Other relevant and equivalent qualifications are considered on an individual basis.

    A registration fee, currently £140 applies to all students on Pre-foundation, Foundation and Access to Higher Education Diploma courses, irrespective of the age of the student. In addition a tuition fee may be payable.
