Ravensbourne’s Moving Image course helps talented individuals accelerate their careers and stand out from the crowd with the design skills and knowledge required by today’s creative industries. The students are encouraged to develop new concepts and approaches to the study and practice of the emerging disciplines in moving image and design.

The cutting edge of the creative industries

Ravensbourne’s MA Moving Image course gives recent graduates and professionals working in the creative industries a clear career advantage in an increasingly competitive employment marketplace. Ravensbourne encourages students to take advantage of the resources available at the institution as well as the special industry relationships the institution nurtures.

    Times are changing

Moving image designers are highly specialised, yet they require a broad range of skills and capabilities to meet the wide-ranging demands of an ever-evolving and demanding industry and its new audiences. Through design abilities and knowledge of technology they can offer a thoroughly innovative approach to a brief.

    Modes of working

Problem-solving skills will be a key aspect of the course and throughout the programme you will be encouraged to think both laterally and analytically. You will broaden your approach to design through experimentation and innovation. Cross-disciplinary work is encouraged, simulating the work-based environment and giving students the opportunity to learn from each other.

    Who’s it for?

Moving Image is for recent graduates or ambitious professionals wanting to progress their learning or careers and explore the new possibilities and opportunities in the developing and expanding areas of moving image. The programme is designed to offer recent graduates and design practitioners additional knowledge and skills that give them the competitive edge in the marketplace.

    What you will study

The course encourages you to gain new skills and experiment with ideas and media. In particular you will be encouraged to explore emerging technologies and animation techniques. It gives you the opportunity to work collaboratively with other students – including those on other disciplines – on a set design brief. You will develop a strong knowledge base, informed by current industry practice and new ideas to help you prepare for your final design proposal. Initially, the course focuses on investigating current business models and market trends to ensure you develop a full understanding of clients’ needs.

    Teaching

The Moving Image course at Ravensbourne combines design education with professional design practice methods.

Learning is facilitated by permanent teaching staff, supported by sessional staff and visiting speakers who are leading, practising professionals working in the creative industries.

The course places considerable emphasis on collaborative learning and working methods. You will work closely with fellow Ravensbourne postgraduate students to encourage effective team working and develop your communication skills.

There is an emphasis on ‘real world’ ways of working, which further develops professional skills and practices. You are helped and encouraged to take on work experience and ‘live’ project work within the industry, which allows you to place your practical and theoretical knowledge in the context of a work environment. Ravensbourne has well-established partnerships with companies seeking specialist moving image designers as well as a production company where students with appropriate skills and knowledge can practice and demonstrate their abilities.

    Laptops

You are required to own or have access to a laptop from the beginning of your studies. Laptops are an essential tool to support personalised learning and give you access, when and where you want it, to many of the creative tools and educational resources you will encounter during your studies.

Laptops are used extensively in all of our courses. You will need one to access our network, and to research, communicate and collaborate during your studies.

    Assessment

Knowledge and understanding is primarily assessed through the delivery of practical project work, as well as the delivery of essays, a project report and development work, individual and group presentations. You are required to conduct background research on the subject and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the discipline.

    Where will it take you

This course provides you with the contextual knowledge, practical skills and intellectual capability to develop your career in moving image design and give you a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Natalia Kouneli - MA Moving Image

After completing my first degree in video design, I worked in post-production for two web TV channels but then decided to return to study. I was attracted to study in the UK as there is so much to learn from the industry in London. I’m enjoying the research side of the course. I’m developing and experimenting with various techniques such as motion graphics and interactive features on the documentaries I’m working on. I want to learn as much as I can so that I can return to my home country, Greece, to set up a studio, teach editing and produce my own documentary films.
