CALL FOR POSITION PAPERS

Beyond opportunities and challenges of pervasive movement and physical exercises in everyday products, services and interactions Workshop at PervasiveHealth 2012

May 21, 2012 – San Diego, US

We solicit submissions for the Workshop on “Beyond opportunities and challenges of pervasive movement and physical exercises in products, services and everyday interactions”, to be held on May 21, 2012, in San Diego, US, in conjunction with the 6th International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth 2012).

The workshop brings together researchers and practitioners to identify priorities for new directions of research and approaches in active design process with the aim of gaining governmental and corporate support.

In the last 150 years innovations in products and services have caused a major change on the human body. Some of those innovations have made our everyday tasks more efficient, comfortable, usable, pleasurable and easy to use. However, those innovations have also removed physical activity from the everyday life whereby issues such as obesity is becoming a problem in the USA and UK as well as in countries such as Greece, traditionally known for healthy diets.

The success of Wii Nintendo, Microsoft Xbox Kinect and other game technology have demonstrated that movement can be successfully introduced back into every day interactions, storytelling and entertainment.

In 2011, a collaborative design project between Ravensbourne College and service design consultancy Thinkpublic, in London, have produced several concepts and prototypes that introduced movement in a playful and pervasive way. The findings showed that the audience was interested in concepts that promoted physical activity through computer games.

This project also demonstrated the need to obtain support from the government to increase the awareness within the corporate world, and encourage businesses to incorporate human-centred design in the development of services and product. Obesity is very popular issue for debate among politicians, however the difficulty is setting out a society wide solution that would encourage physical movement and exercise.

The workshop is designed to be highly interactive and exploratory reflecting a design studio environment, whereby participants will work in groups developing concepts in a pervasive way that introduces a health component into existing products and services.

We would welcome position papers from academics, designers, practitioners from diverse backgrounds that includes game design, IT,, policy development, design management, health and fitness.

Position papers can include best practices and case studies of success and/or failure in relation to the main theme of this workshop which is user resistance and obtaining wider social, corporate and government support for products and services that in a pervasive way that deals with health & exercise issues.

Papers from a rich set of practical, empirical, experimental, and theoretical perspectives are invited. Topics of interest for the workshop include but are not limited to:

-       Case studies of introducing change in health products and services in pervasive way.

-       Case studies of introducing physical activity into products and services.

-       How to deal with user resistance within different target groups?

-       How to measure physical activity in new services and products

-       How to “design” physical exercises, which would contribute to daily recommend physical activity?

-       How to obtain government and business support for these projects?

The workshop will consist of two 2h sessions, which will focus on

(1) user and physical movement, and

(2) design thinking.

Each workshop session will start with an ice breaker, then participants will work in groups lead by a team of design facilitators. The workshop will conclude with a discussion session to talk through further research directions.

Registration will be open to all PervasiveHealth 2012 attendees.
