What next for you? > Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Design and Media) > Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Design and Media)
The UAL Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Design and Media) course is taught in three stages; throughout each stage, you will learn about the range of higher education opportunities and subject areas available after you complete your Diploma.
This intensive course is aimed at school and college leavers and lets you experience a range of design and media activities to help you assess your strengths, confirm your aspirations and lead you to making the right choice about your next step into higher education or work.
A combination of practical studio projects, workshops and traditional academic learning will encourage you to experiment with craft and digital technology. Practicing artists, designers and broadcasters will introduce you to new ideas in design, communications and media. You will receive practical guidance throughout your diploma and help in directing you to the right degree or work option, including interview preparation and how to best present your portfolio.
You will complete the course in a strong position: most students go on to higher education and many to design and broadcasting courses at Ravensbourne. If you decide to go directly into work, we’ll help you to find opportunities.
Your first stage features a series of introductory projects focusing on the core disciplines of:
Art, design and media students will then explore a range of different subject areas, including:
These specialist projects will help you develop a sense of where your skills and interests lie so that you can confidently choose the next stage of the course.
Here, you will deepen and develop specialist knowledge within your chosen subject area. This will enable you to plan your next steps in entering higher education or your chosen career path.
We will encourage you to look and work beyond narrow definitions, and to collaborate with staff and students from other disciplines. This enriching experience will help you achieve a good understanding of design and communication practices.
During this stage you will also develop a proposal for a final major project of study.
During the final stage, you will undertake and complete a major seven-week project, reflecting on your chosen specialist area and your planned progression path. This project will culminate in a public exhibition of your work.
The vast majority of our Foundation students progress to higher education courses at Ravensbourne and other higher education institutions; options include foundation degrees (FdA, FdSc), or undergraduate degrees (BA, BSc).
If you wish to progress to one of our degree courses, please discuss your options with your course leader when you are studying with us.
Alternatively, you may wish to pursue a role in employment; in which case, we have advisors who will be able to help and advise you.
